The Specialist Engineering Contractors (SEC) Group has welcomed the Chancellors announcement of an inquiry into the cost of UK construction. The Group represents a sector comprising 60,000 engineering firms delivering the largest single component of construction value.SEC Group has been urging the Chancellor to achieve savings by cutting out waste in construction rather than by cutting capital spending.
Trevor Hursthouse, SEC Groups chairman said that he was delighted with the announcement since it indicated that this message was getting through.Trevor Hursthouse added: "We had an inquiry over 16 years ago into construction procurement practices.
This revealed that application of best practice would achieve cost savings of 30%. These savings have by and large still to be realised".
